Anthropic Targets the Working Class with New AI Agent

The company’s latest launch focuses on automating professional workflows rather than personal errands, aiming to streamline business operations for small enterprises.

Anthropic has officially entered the crowded arena of artificial intelligence companions with the release of Claude Duet, a tool designed specifically for professionals and small business owners. This new application, currently in research preview, marks a strategic pivot for the company as it seeks to distinguish itself from a rapidly growing field of rivals including Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo. By launching now, Anthropic is positioning itself at the forefront of a market that is quickly evolving from simple chat assistants to autonomous agents capable of executing complex tasks on a user's behalf.

A primary differentiator for Claude Duet is its explicit focus on professional utility over personal convenience. The company has made it clear that this agent is not intended to handle everyday errands, such as booking travel tickets or managing personal schedules. Furthermore, unlike some competing products, Duet does not provide a live, visual feed of its browser activity as it works. This design choice signals that Anthropic is targeting users who need structured, reliable output rather than a digital companion that mimics human browsing habits.

Instead of managing personal life, Duet is engineered to build daily briefings, construct data dashboards, and suggest strategic actions based on the user's existing information. The agent operates through a dedicated virtual machine, allowing it to complete tasks in the background while the user continues with other work. It will only interrupt the user when specific approval is required, creating a workflow that prioritizes uninterrupted productivity over constant interaction.

The technical foundation of Claude Duet is built upon the Claude Opus 5.5 model, which enables the agent to leverage a vast ecosystem of over 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace. This extensive connectivity allows the tool to integrate deeply with the software suites already used by businesses. Additionally, the agent is equipped to make online purchases on behalf of users, utilizing Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay, thereby extending its utility into the realm of automated commerce.

Security and user control remain central to the design of the new agent. Anthropic has implemented safeguards to ensure that sensitive financial actions require explicit user approval. While Duet can process payments, it is restricted from trading securities or transferring money between bank accounts, providing a clear boundary for its financial authority. To further protect user data, the company introduced a new classifier that scrutinizes every message to prevent the leakage of confidential information. By default, the agent will decline requests that ask for highly sensitive details such as credit card numbers or government identification.

The launch of Claude Duet coincides with a broader industry shift toward business-focused artificial intelligence. While competitors like Meta have released personal assistants, they have also introduced versions tailored for small businesses with deep app integrations. Similarly, OpenAI’s Dots has leaned into professional tools. Anthropic’s entry into this space underscores the growing consensus that the next phase of AI adoption will be driven by enterprise and small business needs rather than consumer novelty.

For now, access to Claude Duet is limited. The application is available on iOS and Android devices, as well as on the web via Claude.ai, but only for Pro and Max subscribers. Because the product is still in a research preview phase, users must join a waitlist to gain entry. This controlled rollout suggests that Anthropic is prioritizing quality and feedback over immediate mass adoption, a strategy that may help refine the agent’s capabilities before a wider release.
