Anthropic's Backers Could Reap Billions From Upcoming IPO

As Anthropic prepares for a potential public listing, its investors are seeing massive returns on their early and late-stage bets.

For ordinary investors and market watchers, the story is about the potential for massive wealth creation tied to a single company. As Anthropic moves toward a public listing, which is anticipated this year with a valuation reaching as high as $2 trillion, its backers stand to gain significantly. Even before any public trading begins, at its most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the stakes held by many of its venture capital firms and early backers are already worth billions of dollars, according to figures from Bloomberg.

This illustrates the enormous scale of the artificial intelligence sector and the potential financial rewards for those who invested early. The transition from a private company to a publicly traded one is a critical moment for any firm, but for a company valued at this level, it represents a major event for the financial markets. The figures provided show the current worth of these investments based on the company's last private valuation, a price that already reflects substantial gains for many involved.

Several prominent figures and firms hold major positions in the AI lab. Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, entered the picture during Anthropic's Series A round in 2021, when the company's valuation was $461 million, according to PitchBook data. Today, his stake of approximately 1% is valued at nearly $10 billion. Menlo Ventures, the VC firm that led the company's Series D and has invested over $1 billion in total, holds a position now valued at $14 billion.

Investments made more recently also show significant returns. Iconiq wrote a $6 billion check last year when the company was valued at $183 billion; that late-stage bet is now worth $17 billion. Sequoia, a well-known VC firm, first backed the AI lab earlier this year when it was already valued at $380 billion. Its $3 billion investment secured about 1% ownership, and that stake has already more than doubled in value. The firm has not commented on these figures.

Other backers have also seen their positions grow substantially. Spark Capital, the only VC firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, invested $75 million in the company's 2023 Series C round, when it was valued at $5 billion. That position has since grown more than ninetyfold to a value of $7 billion. Sound Ventures, the firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, invested $35 million in the same 2023 round and has since added $400 million, resulting in a stake now valued at billions. It should be noted that Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new VC firm.

The next step is Anthropic's anticipated public listing this year. The process of going public will provide a formal valuation for the company and allow its current investors to sell their shares on the open market. While no specific date for the offering has been announced, the expected valuation of up to $2 trillion would make it a significant event for the markets. The company has not made any further comment on the timing or details of the potential IPO.
