OpenAI Seeks $30 Billion Boost Before Public Debut

The AI giant is closing in on a massive private funding round that could set a new record for private company valuations.

For investors and business leaders in Texas and the South Central region, the financial landscape of artificial intelligence is shifting rapidly. OpenAI is reportedly in the final stages of securing a massive private capital injection, potentially totaling $30 billion. This move suggests the company may prioritize strengthening its private balance sheet before transitioning to public markets, a strategic choice that could influence how other tech firms in the region approach their own funding strategies.

According to sources speaking to CNBC, the new round is expected to value the company at $1.25 trillion on a pre-money basis. The deal appears to be led by Coatue and includes investors from the United Arab Emirates. Notably, the UAE portion of the investment may be tied to an agreement that provides OpenAI with additional computing power, a critical resource for scaling AI models.

This development follows similar reports from Bloomberg just one month ago, which cited a slightly higher valuation of $1.4 trillion for a similar $30 billion raise. Because terms are still under negotiation, the final numbers and structure of the deal remain subject to change. OpenAI has not publicly commented on the latest reports.

If the $1.25 trillion valuation holds, OpenAI would become the most valuable private company in history. This milestone would significantly raise the stakes for its upcoming initial public offering. The company filed confidential IPO paperwork in June, following a March funding round that valued it at $852 billion post-money. A higher private valuation now means public investors will likely expect greater growth and performance at the time of the listing.

The high bar set by OpenAI also casts a shadow over its main competitor, Anthropic. Many industry observers believe Anthropic’s IPO is imminent, with rumors suggesting its public S-1 filing could appear at any moment. CNBC reports that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its public debut. This target follows a May round where the company raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation, which many had viewed as its final major private raise before going public.

Both OpenAI and Anthropic filed confidential paperwork in June, signaling their readiness to enter public markets soon. For the South Central tech sector, these valuation benchmarks will likely influence local startup ecosystems and venture capital flows, setting a new standard for what investors are willing to pay for AI innovation.
